Week of November 23, December 1:
Please notice the letter from Mrs. Carson concerning carpool:
Parents~
Please note that for safety purposes students are not to play with balls or other items that could go out in the drive during carpool. We know that it is fun to play with other classmates; however, effective immediately this is not allowed due to traffic. It is our intention to make sure that students are safe during carpool and if they are outside they need to be with their parent. Feel free to visit and talk, but balls are not permitted.

Furthermore, if students purposefully leave carpool without having their number called by the elementary supervision s/he will be brought to the elementary office for their parent to pick them up. Any student who mistakenly hears their number and then realizes that it was not called needs to return to the supervision staff and remain in the carpool waiting area. This is more prone to occur in mixed carpool, so please be sure to sign out your child and then wait for them to come out or at least be within sight. Our staff does the very best job possible in keeping your children safe; please assist us in this endeavor. Thank you so much.

The mission of Christian Academy is to develop students with a heart for God who grow as Jesus did in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and man.

Bible Verse: We will not have a verse to memorize this week. The week we return form Thanksgiving our verse will be: You will have a son and you will give Him the name Jesus. Luke 1:31
Spelling: Tuesdays will always be spelling homework nights. Your child will write ther words and sentences on the take home sheet and then write the words and sentences a second time on tablet paper. I will be making sure that the handwriting is acceptable. I know it is a lot to write but they are capable of doing this!! Remind them that I will award C.A.T. for this homework if it is neat enough!!
Words for the week of December 1:( no words this week)
some ring catch do thud puff fetch bank sink notch lung pitch
sentences for dictation:
Can you catch me some fish? The hen will hatch a batch of chicks.
week.

Math: We are now beginnig chapter 5. This chapter will focus on geometery. We are learning about cube, cone, cylinder, sphere, and rectangular prism. We have been focusing on fractions over the past week. At this point the kids are expected to know the facts of adding 1, 2 or 3 by counting on. We are moving away from counters and learning to count on from any number. We are also learning how to use a number line for those harder facts until they are memorized. Now is the time to get out those flash cards and learn those facts from memory!! The next chapter in math will begin to work on higher facts and this is where we will begin doing flash card games in class and they will be assigned as homeowrk.

English: We have been working hard!! We have learned what nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives and article adjectives are!! The biggest thing we are learning is when to capitalize a word and when we don’t. We have a list of six rules we are begiing to learn. So far we have covered, capitalize the first word, capitalize the pronoun I and capatalize a person’s name. We have also talked about sentences that are statements and sentences that are questions. We are working on what is the complete subject and what is the complete predicate!! This seems like a lot but they are getting it so well!! You will notice that I have been having the children write sentences and on the paper they are to tell me the rule they used if the word has a capital letter. This is part of our Shurley English. We do not have to do this on everything but when the sentecnes are given in our English book I tell them they have to write the rule. We always go over what to do so if they listen carefully it isn’t hard at all. When you see sentecnes come home labeld SN, V, Adv, we do those as a class and it is checked for completion. At this point we do not give a grade on them becuase they are done as a whole class. We do write sentences on otehr paper that review these skills and they are graded. You can help your child at home by asking them if they can tell you a word that is a noun or a verb. Ask htem what a verb is? They might need a little help by saying tell me your jingle and then it will click!

Phonics: We have really covered a lot of ground over hthe last couple weeks. We have been working hard on -ng sounds and -nk sounds along with tch The children need to pracitce those sounds a lot! If they are reading at home draw their attention to words with these sound. them to

We are really working on sounding out the word in our head before reading them. This improves their speed when reading. I also wanted to let you know that we are moving on two the other three vowels in phonics. We have learned when to use c and when to use k. We have learned about ck and qu as well as l, f, s, and z are doubled at the end of a short word. The clues for c and k are as follows: k before i and e, c before the other three a, o, and u. /k/ is spelled -ck at the end of a short vowel one syllable word. the help for double consonants is Sam Likes Fried Zebras.

Foundations and Frameworks: We are now heading into a new unit. This unit is Retelling. The kids need to know this at the end of the unit.
Our visual tool is a flow chart. They will need to know we use the flow chart to retell the story by putting what happens first, next, last in the boxes. They will be required to draw a blank flow chart.
Our pattern statement is:
Oral restating requires organinzing ones thoughts.

Process Questions:
*Who was in the story?
*What happened in the story? In what order did it happen?
How can the story be retold, pretending the listener has never heard or read the story?
What distracting details can be left out?(Proficient)
How/when can expression be used?(Exemplary)
They are responsible for learning the first two questions by the end of the unit. We work on all ther questions in class but they only have to tell me the first two.

In Social Studies we are talking about Thanksgiving. We have read about the Pilgrims in our Social Studies Books. We will learn about a few customs of different Indian Tribes along with why we celebrate Thanksgiving. We will end our unit with Native American Day. The children have been writing about what they are thankful for. They also had to write about their precious possessions. I gave them a guide and they had to fill in the rest of the information. I counted the sentences as an English grade.

Don’t forget that we have our Christmas program the Tuesday as soon as we return from Thanksgiving!! This is always such a blessing to see. If you do not have costumes worked out yet it might be good to do that over Thanksgiving.

Also, I will be sending home the letter about our Christmas party as soon as we return form Thanksgiving. We will need many volunteers to mkae this successful!! Please look over the letter when it comes home Monday and let the room mothers know what you are able to help with!! It is a fun way to be involved in the classroom. If you cannot stay for the whole time just volunteer for part of it!! The kids love having their parents come and be a part of this special time in the classroom.

Enjoy your Thanksgving Break!!
